Brief Description:  Start polishing exterior

I would like to have had the plane painted, but I couldn't find a reasonable paint service. I was thinking of painting it myself, but realized it would be a long effort and I didn't really have facilities to expect a reasonable result.

I decided to go ahead and polish the plane realizing that it will be a continual maintenence effort. I started with the empennage using a 6" hand buffer and 7" rotary buffer as shown in the EAA Hints For Homebuilders video by Kerry Fores. For areas not accessible by the machines, hand polishing was required. For all the buffing thus far, I have only used the course Nuvite F9 compound.

For the larger flat areas, I invested in a "BuffPro" drum buffer, as seen on the floor in the second picture. These types of professional buffers get an excellent result in much less time, but are pricey. In pics 2 and 3, the drum was used on the fuselage top, sides and the inboard wing. The outboard wing in pic 3 has not been buffed.

Even with the aid of the machines, many smaller areas and corners still need buffing by hand.

Cleanup of the compound is with mineral spirits. I found using the mineral spirits from a spray bottle (empty Windex bottle) works well with minimal mess and waste.
